Three-Phase Distribution Board Installation - The Park Estate, Nottingham
Robin Hood Electrical Services were recently commissioned to supply and install a new three-phase distribution board at a residential property on The Park Estate in Nottingham. The customer had recently upgraded their property to a three-phase power supply and required a new distribution board to match, making sure the electrical installation was brought fully up to the standard the new supply demanded. We guided the customer through the entire process from start to finish, and he was delighted with the results.
What Is A Three-Phase Power Supply?
Most standard domestic properties in the UK are served by a single-phase power supply, which provides electricity through one live conductor. A three-phase supply, by contrast, delivers power through three separate live conductors, each carrying an alternating current that is offset by 120 degrees from the others. The result is a significantly more powerful and stable electrical supply that is capable of running larger loads more efficiently.
Three-phase supplies are more commonly associated with commercial and industrial premises, but they are increasingly being installed in larger residential properties where the demand for electrical power is high. Properties with electric vehicle chargers, large heating systems, home workshops, high-end audio-visual equipment or other power-hungry installations can benefit considerably from the additional capacity and stability that a three-phase supply provides.
Why A New Distribution Board Was Required
When a property upgrades from a single-phase to a three-phase supply, the existing distribution board will almost always need to be replaced. A standard single-phase consumer unit is simply not designed to handle three-phase power, and continuing to use one after a three-phase supply has been connected would be both unsafe and non-compliant with current wiring regulations. A purpose-built three-phase distribution board is required, designed to manage and distribute the incoming power correctly across all three phases whilst incorporating the appropriate protective devices for each circuit within the property.
The Importance Of Getting It Right
A three-phase distribution board installation is a specialist piece of electrical work that requires a thorough understanding of three-phase systems, current wiring regulations and the specific requirements of the property being served. At Robin Hood Electrical Services, all our work is carried out by NICEIC accredited engineers, so that every installation we complete meets the required safety standards and is fully compliant with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). On a job of this nature, that level of competence and accreditation is not optional, it is essential.
Guiding The Customer Through The Process
Three-phase electrical installations can feel daunting for homeowners who are unfamiliar with them, and this customer was no exception. Part of our role on this job was to take the time to explain clearly what was involved, what the new distribution board would do and what the customer could expect from his upgraded electrical supply going forward. Keeping our customers informed and comfortable throughout the process is something we take seriously on every job we carry out, and this project was a good example of that approach in practice.
The Finished Installation
The new three-phase distribution board was installed neatly and to a high standard, with all circuits correctly identified, labelled and protected. The customer was delighted with the finished result and with the way the job had been handled from start to finish. Their property is now properly equipped to take full advantage of the three-phase supply, with an installation that is safe, compliant and built to last.
